The air in our apartment on the first really hot evening of the year. There’s a shimmer in the yellow lamplight of the back room and everything falls silent, like the air is taking up all the space and we can’t intrude. It’s unique to the city and something I’ll miss when I’m gone.
I get great comfort from my things sometimes, the ones I carry every day. Like they’re little extensions of me. I hold onto them when I feel like I’m losing my grip on who I am.
